On the Twelfth Day of Blogmas…

On the twelfth day of Blogmas, the gamers asked of me, one reason to play video games.

Here it is! The final day of Athena’s Blogmas! What a start to the year it’s been. But all good things must come to an end, and the final day asks for a good reason to play video games. And here it is!

Whatever reason you want

Yes, this will seem like a cop-out, but I don’t feel there is just one good reason to play video games. You could play them as an escape after a tough day, or as a way to spend time with friends (local or otherwise). They could be there as something to challenge you or to to tell you a story. There isn’t a reason to play games because there are countless reasons to do so.

Stories Untold

Whatever it is that brings you to gaming, that’s fine. Other people may play for the same reason or for a completely different one. What matters is that we’re all part of a community that plays! There are some people that need to realise that still, who need to recognise that gaming can be for everyone. But the vast majority of gamers are inclusive, respectful, and caring. Perhaps being a part of that is the best reason of all.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these past 12 posts. I’ve had fun writing them, but it’s back to business as usual this afternoon!

  1. I deeply appreciate the message here because it’s one I’ve tried to explain to people many times over. Every person is going to have a different personal reason to play games. Some want to be immersed in a story, others just want something to keep their hands occupied while watching TV sometimes. I happen to fall into both of those categories. Play whatever games make you happy because you want to play them for any reason.

    1. I think there’s a hangover from the ‘games are for children’ mentality of a few years ago here too. The idea that you if you play games you aren’t a grown up still exists and ties into some people struggling to understand why someone would play games. With that said, I’m not too fussed if people think games are for kids. I’m going to enjoy them regardless :-).

  2. I agree with you. There is not just one good reason to play a game. It can be anything. For me, I do it as a past time. Gaming is also something that connects me with my brother.
