Return of the XCOM War Logs – Part 6

Straight into the action! We receive news that EXALT have cornered an XCOM supply convoy. We’ll send in Tim (aka ‘Richter’), Claire, Rich (aka ‘Caper’), Ben (aka ‘Data’), Heather (aka ‘Doc’), and Tom for rescue duties! Looks like the aliens are trying to blow up a dam! Not sure why, but we’ll go with it. A pair of Mutons beam in, but Data and Tom immediately shoot their faces off. Claire handles a release valve to keep the dam in one piece and takes up position on a tower, rifle at the ready. More aliens appear, but this time there are more than we can handle quickly. We’re short on time so Caper pushes forward at the cost of a lot of health. Claire, Data, and Doc take down a Mectoid to try to keep him safe, but Tom pops a smoke grenade to guarantee his security. Caper presses on again, taking revenge for the harm he’d suffered, whilst Doc takes out another Sectoid. Tom releases the next valve and takes out a Sectoid but finds himself in the line of fire of a Mectoid as it beams in the deal with our advance.

Here come the aliens!

Richter does what any heavy weapons expert would and cracks out a rocket launcher to expose the Mectoids weak points as well as destroy a Sectoid for good measure. This gives Doc all the opportunity she needs to finish it off! To round of the current wave, Caper capitalises on the aliens grenade-o-phobia to blow away a Thin Man, allowing the team to advance. Data provides him with some healing, but Doc finds herself vulnerable to some Thin Man fire, taking a significant wound in the process. Data deals with this too (is there anything he can’t do?) and Doc handles the next valve. She continues to put herself in harm’s way, nearly being taken out by a newly arrived Muton, but somehow the rest of the team work together to kill it before it can get in range. Lucky. Claire handles the final valve, giving us some time to get to the convoy! Data moves up and finds what we’re looking for just as some more Mectoids and Sectoids pile in. Richter repeats his previous success with another rocket to take out a pair of them. The surviving one doesn’t take kindly to this and decides that Doc’s luck should finally run out. It runs in behind her cover and kills her with a huge plasma barrage. Another one dies. Caper kills it, but the damage is already done. Tom reaches the convoy, and the survivors head home. He earns the nickname ‘Combo’.

Looks like EXALT have a cell in Japan, so Tom (aka ‘Combo’) heads off for a covert operation!

Time for one of those pesky alien abduction missions! With a lot of people injured or on other duties, we send in Dave (aka ‘Chip’), Claire, Caroline, Tim (aka ‘Richter’), Nick, and Leanne (aka ‘Angel’). Chip spots some Seekers right off the bat, so that’s going to be fun! One tries to get all up in Claire’s face, but everyone shoots the crap out of it. She returns the favour when the other pays Richter a visit. Nick finds a Sectoid Commander and a Mectoid, suffering the consequences of that with some nasty plasma burns. He makes sure the Sectoid doesn’t bother anyone else though. The Mectoid takes a massive robo-punch to the fave courtesy of Chip, falling quickly. That’s when the shit hit the fan, with another Sectoid, a Mectoid, and a pair of Mutons turning up. Nick is very vulnerable here, but Chip moves in to take the brunt of the hurt. Concentrated fire from the whole team eventually brings down the Mectoid, whilst Claire wipes out a Muton. Leanne deals with the Sectoid before Richter goes a bit overboard with the final Muton thanks to his rocket launcher. He kills it but leaves Leanne at death’s door due to the explosion. Thankfully, that was the final threat and everyone makes it home. Claire earns the nickname ‘Demon’, which is pretty badass.

Everyone shoots the hell out of that Seeker.

Tom (aka ‘Combo’) has kindly given us a call back to request extraction from EXALT territory. We’ll send Dave (aka ‘Chip’), Ben (aka ‘Data’), Lorna (aka ‘Spectre’), Faizan, Caroline, and Tim (aka ‘Richter’) for taxi duty. Chip quickly finds a group of EXALT soldiers trying to hack our equipment. Richter takes some shots at them, but they remain upright until Caroline rolled in to finish one off. Chip uses his newly developed particle cannon to melt another, but we’re running out of time. We press forward but Richter has to leave himself exposed to protect our uplink and takes a nasty amount of damage. Data nukes another enemy (seriously, this particle cannon is amazing), whilst Caroline flanks a further target. Richter handles the last of our current opposition in classic style: a rocket to the face. EXALT send in another trio of threats, but they quickly bounce off Combo, Faizan, and Caroline. One last wave rolls in, but Spectre and Faizan immediately handle a pair of them. Chip deals with another and Richter rounds us out with one final rocket blast. Time to head home!

We had no trouble at all with this one.

No time for a break though! We’ve detected a UFO that’s landed in the middle of nowhere. It’s a big one too, so let’s send…pretty much the same team as last time! We swap out Lorna (who is in for gene modding) for Claire (aka ‘Demon’). Let’s rock! Demon finds the UFO and a few Mutons guarding it. Concentrated group fire takes down the Berzerker that rolled in with them, but Chip manages to find 3 more to join the party. It’s getting busy here. Demon blasts one whilst Data deals with another. One Muton falls back, but the two remaining rush forward to flank Combo, leaving him dead. Faizan destroys his killer whilst Caroline deals with the remaining one. Two Seekers fly in, but only one survives as Data ruins one of them. The other cloaks briefly, appearing moments later to attack Caroline. Faizan makes the save whilst Chip and Data press forward into the ship.

Bring the fire!

They find a Mectoid and a Sectoid Commander, the former of which gives Chip both barrels of his plasma cannon. Those Mec units are pretty sturdy though, and it’ll take more than that to put him down. Faizan and Demon handle the Sectoid Commander but the Mectoid needs a lot more work. We have two Mecs though! Chip and Data focus their fire to finish it off. The ship’s command centre contains three Sectoid Commanders. The droids are sent in to take down the first, whilst Faizan and Demon handle another. Caroline fires on the third and takes it out thanks to a critical hit. With that, we head home. Caroline earns the nickname Voodoo.

We shoot down the Overseer UFO! Thanks to our latest in interceptor technology, we manage to take it out, but we’re expecting some stiff resistance during our investigation of it. We have a number of injuries, but we still have some badass fighters! Let’s send Dave (aka ‘Chip’), Ben (aka ‘Data’), Caroline (aka ‘Voodoo’), Claire (aka ‘Demon’), Faizan, and Rich (aka ‘Caper’). Chip finds some Heavy Floaters (which sounds odd) hanging out the front of the wreck. Faizan and Voodoo handle the first after Data manages to miss it with his particle cannon. Caper and Chip manage to put down the second, but we’re quickly attacked by some Drones and a Sectopod! These things are insanely powerful due to being able to attack multiple times in a single turn, and having very high damage overwatch attacks. Faizan destroys a Drone, but Chip takes a face full of death beam. He survives, but the Sectopod sets up for a rocket barrage, forcing Demon and Faizan into the open. Voodoo’s plasma rifle takes out the second Drone, but Caper’s rush forward causes a pair of Elite Mutons to join the fray.

Demon has a lot of bad luck here, missing a lot of shots against the Sectopod.

We have very little luck with the Sectopod, missing shot after shot and barely scraping its armour. Chip and Data take an absolute pounding from all sides, resulting in Data falling to the ground, near dead. Demon takes out one of the Elites, with Faizan finally destroying the Sectopod after a colossal tussle. Chip’s grenade launcher deals with the final Elite and Voodoo rushes to get Data in a stable condition. We’re in a bad state, with a man down, another nearly dead, and our surviving Mec in a pretty bad state. We manage to get to the command centre, and find two more Elites and an Ethereal, the alien’s ruling class. ChipFaizan, and Voodoo team up to take down the elites, but the Ethereal mind controls Caper. Voodoo ignores the threat from this and, supported by Demon flanks the Ethereal to take it down with her pistol. Mission complete! Faizan earns the nickname Mustang, and we’ve recovered an interesting piece of alien tech.

Data was lucky to get out of this alive.

After all the chaos of the previous mission, something seems to have happened with the aliens! We’ve found their mothership in the skies above Earth! Looks like we’re entering the endgame. Meanwhile, EXALT crop up again, needing Faizan (aka ‘Mustang’) to head out on a covert mission to see what the fuss is all about.

    1. You do need to put a fair bit in to get the most out of it really, and I get that that is a bit off putting. The early game is brutal as you’re very under powered but it becomes much more satisfying late on once you have better weapons and equipment.

      1. 20 missions, 44 kills – Heather is on the rampage.

        It’s unfortunate that the huge plasma barrage stopped her epic onslaught.

        I wanted to see her ’til the end.

        Her sacrifice did not go to waste.

        She will be remembered.

        Yet another great XCOM post!
