Return of the XCOM War Logs – Part 7

Faizan (aka ‘Mustang’) phones us back almost immediately! Seems he needs collecting sooner than we thought. With all the injuries in our previous mission, we need to bring in some new recruits. Dave (aka ‘Chip’)Lorna (aka ‘Spectre’)Reuben, Tim (aka ‘Richter’), Saf, and Andrew get ready for action. We need to protect our uplinks again, and Chip quickly finds a lot of EXALT forces heading right for it. He sets up a proximity mine to hold them off as the rest of the team take up defensive positions. One tries to jump us but runs into a barrage of fire from the squad! Chip takes the fight to the enemy but comes under fire himself. Being a tough bastard means he powers through and blows away one of them with a grenade before Reuben arrives to back him up by taking out another. We start to be put under a lot of pressure, with a lot of EXALT soldiers arriving. Andrew handles one, whilst Reuben uses our newly developed Blaster Launcher to blow up another. Richter cracks out the heavy laser cannon to take an enemy down from the high ground. things are looking up for us.

XCOM Enemy Within
Lorna joins the team in taking down a threat.

But it doesn’t last long. Their numbers are high, and we start to get swarmed. Mustang tries to take one down, but they get through and manage to flank Reuben and Saf to cause them a lot of damage. The latter takes some revenge with a plasma burst to the face of an enemy sniper. Spectre misses a 94% shot though and finds herself very vulnerable to a counter attack. Chip arrives to make the save though before Reuben makes up for the harm he suffered with a heavy plasma barrage. Chip then vaporises another that tries to flank Andrew. Saf works with Spectre to bring down one more before Andrew gets into a better position. Faizan makes use of his laser pistol to keep the team covered whilst they reload. Everyone’s looking tired and injured, but we seem to be through the worst of it. EXALT send in their last soldier, who is expertly taken out by Reuben mission complete! Saf is promoted to Sniper (of which we have many!) and Andrew becomes Support (of which we are short).

XCOM Enemy Within
Reuben uses the Blaster Launcher to deal with two enemies on the ground floor.

We learn of an alien prison convoy, so we send in Ben (aka ‘Data’), Dave (aka ‘Chip’), Leanne (aka ‘Angel’), Faizan (aka ‘Mustang’), Paul (aka ‘Vampire’), and Emma to handle it. A few Thin Men (haven’t seen them for a while) start us off when Angel runs into a group of them. They’re pretty small fry, and Emma opens her alien killing account with one of them. Chip and Vampire clear out the group with ease. Ah! It seems that this is a bigger problem, as taking out that group has set off an alarm! If we don’t get to them in time, then the hostages will be killed. The team pile forward (possibly whilst shouting “MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!” in a dramatic fashion) whilst Vampire covers them from the back. A Berzerker turns up but is immediately destroyed as everyone turns their weapons on it. More Thin Men turn up to do their THINg (geddit?!) but they won’t pose much of a threat to us. Emma and Mustang each handle one, whilst Data cracks out the flamethrower for one more. Vampire finds himself out of the action and rushes forward to join in, deftly evading enemy fire as he goes. Chip deals with the last threat and manages to find the ship’s command console. The aliens send in the last of their forces to hold us back, with a Thin Man and a Berzerker (who appears on the UFO roof for some reason). Angel and Data figure out the best way to kill the latter is to shoot it in the face. So they do just that. The Thin Man tries to harm Chip but soon realises its mistake when a particle cannon shoots its nose off. Assuming it has a nose. Angel saunters up to the command console and presses the YOU WIN button. Home time! Emma is promoted to Assault.

XCOM Enemy Within
Some sweet sniper action there.

We’ve found a UFO flying around. Our interceptor shoots it down in a single round from its cannon. Are we getting too tough? Let’s find out as Ben (aka ‘Data’), Leanne (aka ‘Angel’), Nick, Lorna (aka ‘Spectre’), Andrew, and Tim (aka ‘Richter’) go to investigate. Data finds a Sectoid Commander and a Mectoid, but they quickly fall back for some reason. If they were trying to lull us into a false sense of security, it didn’t work as Data, Richter, and Angel shoot chunks off the Mectoid until it falls down. Data doubles his count for the day by taking out the Commander too. Nick presses forward a little too far from the rest of the team and finds a Muton and a Berzerker hanging out in the UFO tea room. Angel and Andrew are there to support before Nick finishes it off with the new Alloy Cannon we’ve developed. We enter the UFO and find an Ethereal and an Elite Muton. Richter decides that the Blaster Launcher is a good thing to use, and he destroys a Muton and injures everything else. Shame about the UFO. Nick flanks around the side of the Elite Muton to take it out, before the Ethereal lands a glancing blow on Andrew. Data determines (with his robo-brain) that this just isn’t on and shoots it in the face to give us a win. Nick earns the nickname ‘Devil Dog’.

Leanne literally fights through the flames.

EXALT crop up again, this time we send Rich (aka ‘Caper’) to see what these shenanigans are all about.

It seems that the aliens aren’t letting up, carrying out an attack on Mexico. Time for Karl, Ben (aka ‘Data’), Dave (aka ‘Chip’), Lorna (aka ‘Spectre’), Faizan (aka ‘Mustang’), and Caroline (aka ‘Voodoo’) to suit up. Looks like this could be a tough one! We don’t see many aliens to begin with, but a lot of civilians are being attacked outside our range of vision. Chip finds out why we couldn’t see many, as a veritable horde of aliens appears suddenly. A heap of Heavy Floaters, Mutons, and Berzerkers rush towards us. Spectre starts the show by smashing the Berzerker hard enough to allow Mustang to finish it off. Karl puts down a Cryssalid that snuck into the fight whilst Data finds his mark against a Muton. Mustang presses forward to rescue a civilian but misses the target on a Heavy Floater, which could prove costly. Thankfully, Spectre is holding the back line and takes one out to rectify the error. Voodoo joins Mustang on the front line and finds herself charged down by Mutons and Berzerkers. The team focus fire on the Berzerker, being the biggest threat, but leave the Floaters aloft. Annoyingly, the aliens seem less fussed about us and look to kill civilians instead, so we need to get more aggressive. Chip throws a grenade into the mix to flush the Mutons out of cover, allowing Voodoo to finish one off. Spectre takes a shot from the far side of the map and, against the odds, takes out the final enemy. We rescued a lot of civilians here, in spite of the aliens’ best efforts.

XCOM Enemy Within
That’s a lot of aliens.

Rich (aka ‘Caper’) has requested a pick-up after the whole EXALT debacle. We’re sending Karl, Ben (aka ‘Data’), Caroline (aka ‘Voodoo’), Leanne (aka ‘Angel’), Nick (aka ‘Devil Dog’), and Claire (aka ‘Demon’) on taxi duty. Caper tells us that he needs to finish hacking the EXALT terminals before we can leave, so the team move in to give him cover. Demon goes hunting for high ground but finds a group of enemies for her trouble. Angel and Data handle one of them, but the rest use smoke grenades to hide their advance. Demon opens fire on the next, but another group of three show up to force the team to change position. Devil Dog chases down a threat and eliminates it with ease whilst Angel presses out on her own to confront the new arrivals, taking out one in the process. Demon clears out the final threat from the first group, causing the two remaining threats to start falling back. She halves that number as they flee! Caper begins working his way towards the rest of the team, covered by Demon who takes out the final visible threat. Caper reaches the first com relay, causing a few new aliens to arrive. Karl manages to take out two of them, whilst Demon (clearly the MVP) handles the other initial threat. Meanwhile, Caper manages to deal with the final com relay and heads to the extract point. A few more EXALT turn up, but Karl does a great job of blowing them up with a blaster launcher round. The final enemy comes face to face with Caper’s plasma pistol and comes out worst. Time to head home!

XCOM Enemy Within
That blaster launcher is an absolute godsend.

Another UFO gets shot down. Things are going well really, so let’s send in Ben (aka ‘Data’), Leanne (aka ‘Angel), Andrew, Paul (aka ‘Vampire’), Rich (aka ‘Caper’) and Tim (aka ‘Richter’). Turns out this is a really big UFO. This could take a while. Richter does a great job of finding some Mutons with a Berzerker in tow. Vampire, Caper, and Andrew are on hand to put down the Berzerker whilst Data handles a Muton. Angel handles the last one as it attempts to flee. The team work their way around the outside of the ship first, rather than going into the thick of it. After a good walk around we find a room to investigate and find an Ethereal and a Muton Elite. Seems like fairly light work until we get a Cyberdisc and its Drone buddies sneaking up on us. I knew going into the ship was a bad idea. Things quickly go downhill as two more Mutons and a Berzerker come running in, and Angel gets mind controlled by the Ethereal. Things are looking a real mess now.

XCOM Enemy Within
Going into the UFO wasn’t the best idea.

Vampire ditches his sniper rifle and takes down the Muton Elite pistol style, but only after it had hammered Caper pretty severely. Everyone realises that the Ethereal is the biggest threat, as it drains health from Angel and uses her to attack Data. Data takes even more damage as the Berzerker gets aggressive with him too. He gets his revenge by punching the Ethereal to death with his mighty robo-fist. Angel, now free of mind control, is having a bad day as the Berzerker turns its attention to her. She lives, but only just. Andrew and Caper take it down just in time for the Cyberdisc to round the corner. It’s met with an angry Vampire and Richter though, who destroy it before it has a chance to cause any harm. We take the opportunity to reload as there are more threats on the way. Caper and Data deal with the Drones before Angel and Richter take to the high ground to hammer the Mutons. Turns out that’s it, and everyone heads home, wounded, but alive.

XCOM Enemy Within
Caper takes a long range shot with his shotgun and somehow hits the mark!

We’re currently entering people for psionic testing, as psychic people are the only ones who can help us get to the alien mothership. Apparently. We’ll see if there are any results next time…
