Love your Backlog

Dear 12-year-old me,

One day you’ll have so many games that you won’t have nearly enough time to play them.

Yours in nostalgia,

Future Rob

Bendy
I knocked Bendy and the Ink Machine out of the backlog recently. Go me.

It’s been said more than a few times in the past (by me as well) that the dreaded gaming backlog is an interesting beast. Some see it as a testament to wasted money, others as an insurmountable stack of games (the pile of shame if you will) that will never get completed. Personally, I see it as a stack of possibilities. Something to dip into when I don’t have anything else to play. If I pick out something I’m not enjoying, I like to set it aside and consider it a loss. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t get finished.

This has all come from something from a couple of months ago from Later Levels regarding backlogs. Now, I’m pretty late to the party considering I was meant to write something on this by the middle of February, but it’s better late than never I suppose. I recently went through my backlog and started deleting some games that I don’t really consider backlogged. These are mostly ones that came with Games with Gold or PlayStation Plus. With that said, I have added some from Xbox Games Pass as they are ones I have intended to play. I, therefore, present this badge!

Love Your Backlog
Less than 100 games technically.

This might be far less than some, but the grand total of time in this list is somewhat insane. Things like Record of Agarest War Zero is listed as over 60 hours which is a lot for me. All things considered though, I’ve started going through games a little more readily. Recently I played through Halo Guardians which was…fine I suppose. It didn’t feel like the Halo games as I remember them. And the lack of split-screen is somewhat insulting!

Anyway. I intend to get on top of my backlog a little and work through some of the older ones on there. There’s a link to it right here, and if there are any games you see on there that are worth me getting straight into, I may well take your advice! Here are a few highlights though:

Longest Game

This would be the aforementioned Record of Agarest War Zero. I haven’t actually played the original game in the series, but this was on offer for around £3 so I picked it up as I fancied a game akin to Fire Emblem. I think I’m put off by the 65-or-so hour play time. Maybe I had more free time when I bought this, who knows!

Shortest Game

The Beginner’s Guide is only about 90 minutes long according to How Long To Beat. It’s a walking simulator of sorts and is something I’d probably really enjoy. I have no idea why I haven’t played it yet. I’ll get around to this.

Game Most Likely Never to get Played

Sacred 2
I should like this far more on PC than I do.

Probably Sacred 2 Gold on PC. I actually played this through on Xbox 360 when it was first released and remember enjoying it. I picked it up pretty cheap on PC but haven’t really got into it nearly as much as I remember. The controls didn’t feel right (possibly because I last played it on a controller) and I only spent about 20 minutes before quitting. I don’t think I’ll be back.

Game That Has Spent Longest in the Backlog

ShadowRun: Dragonfall claims this category. I really enjoyed the ShadowRun reboot from a few years back, and quickly picked up the followup to it. I just haven’t got around to playing it, mostly because I’ve not been in the mood for a big beefy top-down RPG recently. Or indeed for the past three years, it seems. I’m pretty sure this one will get played.

The Person Responsible For Most of These Games

Me obviously. I’m quite guilty of getting swept up in suggestions I hear in podcasts and so forth. And in the past, the Steam sale was a horrible addiction for me. I’m much better for it now and only pick up games I intend to play soon. Curse my game buying addiction!

Well, that was somewhat cathartic. I might make use of How Long To Beat’s random selection feature to pick out what I get onto next. Maybe I’ll even write about it.

      1. It’s not just the ones coming out, it’s all the ones already out that I keep looking at that are my problem. They are the most tempting. I’m trying not to think about all the ones coming out.

      2. Haha I made my peace with that thought ages ago. I still want more games though! It is strange when you are glad for games releasing that you have no interest in just because it doesn’t mentally go on the I would like one day list.

      3. I’m kind of grateful for things like Game Pass right now as it means there are always games I want to play available without me having spent money on them to just sit in a pile!

  1. Backlogs are definitely intense! It’s definitely hard to approach at times. Sometimes I just want to play the shortest game to get it over with while other times I just want to pick a nice long one and stay there for a while. I don’t think the backlog will ever go away so it definitely is handy to have something to draw from when you need a title to play

    1. It’s very true that I like a good short game from time to time, but I have a bad habit of avoiding the short ones on my play list in case I want something quick in the future. I should probably stop doing that!

      1. In my case I’m really bad at a lot of games, so games that are supposed to be played in two hours (like Superhot) end up taking me 15.

  2. The game buying addiction, hello fellow gamer how are you? Backlogs are definitely intense, I have so many games in backlog that I can’t comprehend. Stuff ranging from 2002 to 2009 and beyond, it’s impossible. It’s hard to approach, especially if you have stuff that you can’t play anymore because the console no longer exists.

Only games I’ve completed so far is BioShock 2: Remastered, Mass Effect: Andromeda ( This one took me a lifetime.) , and Far Cry 5 ( Been meaning to write this one up, it’s just sitting there, half completed.)
    Awesome post!

    1. I think there’s a lot to be said for striking off games that you’re never going to play which is something I’ve started doing. No point in taunting myself with something that’s never going to be played!

      1. True. I might start doing the same, yesterday I was digging out some stuff ( I’m moving out.) and I found some games from the Playstation 2 era that I never got around to playing, games like God of War 2, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, Medal of Honor: European Assault, Def Jam: Fight for NY, and a couple obscure ones. Man, I think I’m going to just start striking those games off because I don’t have my PS2 anymore. No point in trying to go back when the console is some person’s home somewhere!

      2. That’s a shame really. Def Jam 2 was pretty fun! But if you haven’t got a way of playing them then there’s no way you should count them as part of your backlog. Hold onto them for the future when you may pick up a new console.

      3. I’m hoping the PS5 is backwards compatiable for Playstation 2 games. Would be sweet to use those games for something, don’t want to sell them just yet. Def Jam is pretty fun, such a shame that it was put on the shelf after ICON came out. ICON is one of my favorite fighting games of all time despite it being very underrated.

  3. My wife and I always joke about me saying “I don’t have anything to play” is her equivalent of “I don’t know what to wear.” I’m sitting at 400 games in my Steam library and I’ve probably played 50. The Humble Bundle Monthly’s have definitely increased this number a lot.

  4. I used to get stressed out by my backlog, but then I came to the realization that all the games will get played eventually. That being said, mine isn’t all that deep at the moment, probably due to the fact that I don’t really buy games at launch anymore. That will change after the next Stram sale…

  5. Instead of working on my backlog, I watch Zelda Let’s Plays and waste time on Pic-a-Pix, though I *guess* the latter counts? Once I finish all the puzzles, I’ll…probably download more, but I do plan on getting in some FFVI play time this weekend. The backlog is a harsh mistress…

  6. I continuously add to my backlog, even though I know I shouldn’t… I can’t help it! I kind of have a system going though, where I try to concentrate on one or two games before moving on to the next one. I’ve knocked some shorter games off my backlog recently, which I’m proud of myself for haha!

  7. I feel this. I’m so bad about my backlog that I literally named my blog after it. My boyfriend always teases me for buying on sale games that I never get around to playing. I use a free app called GameTrack for it and have been making a lot of progress. It really helps to stay organized!
