On the tenth day of Blogmas, the gamers asked of me, three things gamers should know about games.
Nearly there! There are only two more days after this, and Athena’s crack team of blog-tastic writers continue apace! Today is about things gamers should know about games. I’m not too sure how to interpret that, but let’s give it a shot anyway!
1. Don’t let people tell you what to play
Games are fun, and you should have fun playing them. Whether this fun comes from a whimsical 3D world to explore, or a brutal horror-fest, if you’re enjoying it then more power to you! Don’t let people tell you that you shouldn’t enjoy the game you’re currently playing, or that you’re wrong for liking something that’s a ‘bad’ game. that isn’t to say that recommendations are a bad thing, though. You do you.
2. Don’t be a prat about what other people are playing
You do you, so let other people be too. Just because someone is playing something you don’t like doesn’t give you the right to berate them. There’s nothing wrong with sharing an opinion (in a respectful way) and having a discussion, of course. In fact this is a great way to make friends. But don’t be an arse about it! Be open minded. You may be surprised at what you enjoy.
3. Play the games you buy…if you want to
That backlog is not a list of shame, but a list of options. When you’re done with your current blockbuster, when you’re short of money, or when you just don’t know what to play, you always have those options available. Don’t feel obliged to play them. Dip into them if and when you’re ready. And if you’re not having fun? Chalk it up as a loss and move on. You don’t have to force yourself to have fun if you aren’t.
Honestly, I think these three are kind of the same thing looking back. But I’m writing from a place of honesty with them, so take it as you will. What would you like all gamers to know?
Well said!
When you spend a lot of time on Twitter (etc) hearing people constantly talking about games – positively, negatively or whatever, it can be quite easy to get swept up in it all and feel like you HAVE to play something, even if you don’t really want to deep down.
I think everyone should basically just chill out, be respectful and remember that the point of gaming is to enjoy it.

Quite so! I’ve been sucked into playing certain games that I otherwise wouldn’t have due to the genre in question. Surprisingly I ended up not enjoying them! I need to shut out that sort of noise sometimes!

I have this nasty compulsion to finish things even when I’m not having a blast with it, especially if I’ve paid for it. There is a weird mental trigger that happens after I’ve sunk a certain amount of time in to a game that I feel I need to finish it. The fact that I’ve never finished FF XII or Xenoblade both eat at me and I still plug away at my old saves for them every once in a while. I should just right them off, especially XII because I can’t stand that game after a certain point but something continues to pick at me to go back.

I get that a lot. It’s hard to leave things half finished, but there has to come a point when you say that enough is enough. At a certain age time becomes more valuable and I don’t like wasting it on something I’m not enjoying so much any more.

I’ll never understand why some people on the internet get all rage-y when you like a game they hate, and insist on telling you how terrible your favourite games are. Sigh!

You’re not a proper gamer if you don’t like what everyone else likes!

“That backlog is not a list of shame, but a list of options.” Well put, my friend! If that’s the case, then I have a TON of options waiting for me 😉

Haha. It’s true that I should probably avoid giving myself any more options!
